A prospective study on efficacy of sutureless and glue-free conjunctival autograft in surgical correction of pterygium

Abstract

Background: Pterygium, a very common ocular problem in tropical countries can be corrected by surgical removal of the proliferative fibrovascular tissues and conjunctival autografting. Recently, a sutureless and glue-free conjunctival autograft has been developed for its surgical correction, though its clinical efficacy has not been widely investigated. Aims and objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of sutureless and glue-free conjunctival autogaft in surgical correction of pterygium. Materials and Methods: Detailed history, clinical symptoms and ocular examination results were noted and pterygium excision with limbal conjunctival autografting without using glue or sutures was performed after topical administration of antibiotic drops in 50 patients visiting to Patna Medical College, Patna, Bihar. Post surgical management included topical administration of antibiotics and steroids and patients were examined post operatively on 2nd day, 1 week, 6 weeks, and 6 months for any complication or recurrence. Chi-square test was used to find out association of risk factors. Results: Pterygium was more common in male, persons working outdoors and belonging to age group of 41-50 years. Nasal region of the right eye appeared the most susceptible site. Minimal intra and post-operative complications were recorded after conjunctival autograft surgery. Antibiotics and steroid therapy responded well in management of post-operative complications. Relapse was noted in 2 patients younger than 40 years, 3 to 4 months after surgery. Conclusion: Sutureless and glue-free conjunctival autograft using the patient’s blood as bioadhesive was found to be safe, effective and low cost technique with minimal post-surgical complication and very low recurrence rates.
